Abstract

Naturally-occurring bacterial strains have been cultivated from solids previously exposed to cyanide that will tolerate 300 ppm sodium cyanide under anaerobic conditions. The bacteria derived from the solid inoculum have been shown to reduce the cyanide level from 300 ppm sodium cyanide to essentially zero in about 5O days under anaerobic conditions. Various types of autotrophic media were examined, and the nutrients providing the best growth were established. Degradation of cyanide in sterilized solids was determined for comparison with degradation obtained in bioactive solids. All experiments were conducted at ambient temperature and initial pH of approximately 10.5.
