Abstract
Studies have been conducted using Pyramid Lake, Nevada, water as a medium, to investigate the effects of various parameters on the growth of the blue-green algae Nodularia spumigena, the main contributor to the annual algal bloom on the brackish, eutrophic lake. Field data at Pyramid Lake was taken before, during, and after the blooms in 1972 and 1973- This data was used to establish initial conditions for growing isolated Nodularia spumigena in chemostats. From batch fermentations, it was found that N. spumigena growth is effected most by light intensity, with low light intensities, 15 foot candles being the optimum, promoting growth. Temperature of the culture medium was also a key factor with temperatures above and below 22°C having adverse effects on Nodularia spumigena.
