Abstract

This thesis is an introduction to the diagnostic thermal feature types of the Mescalero Sands environment of southeastern New Mexico. A new methodological and analytical approach highlights the importance of simple fire features, an often overlooked and undervalued cultural resource. Employing new excavation techniques and an emphasis on form, this thesis re-defines feature function and patterns in their chronology. Much like diagnostic artifacts, changes occurred in the construction and use of simple fire hearths spanning the Holocene, revealing much about subsistence and human economy.
