Abstract

This research analyses the benefits and drawbacks associated with the Service Enterprise (SE) training administered by Nevada Volunteers, the Governor's commission that manages volunteer programs in the state. Nevada Volunteers offers the SE training, created by Points of Light, to non-profits in the state with the goal of helping them better leverage their volunteers. To date, six non-profits in Nevada have received the certification with more expected to receive certification in the coming months. To assess the SE program, I conducted background research to understand the SE program and conducted qualitative interviews with five of the six certified organizations, including Nevada Volunteers. Interviews were transcribed and coded using NVivo qualitative analysis software to understand key themes in the experiences of certified organizations. Interview data suggest that the training has been successful in helping the organizations with the way they manage, recruit, and utilize volunteers in two main ways: increasing engagement/retention of volunteers and learning best practices. Of the five organizations interviewed, only one emphasized significant drawbacks, namely not seeing major changes in their organization after the certification. Nevada Volunteers is also looking to implement an online platform to make their training more accessible, another factor that many of the interviewed organizations expressed interest in and support for. Overall, these findings will help Nevada Volunteers better advertise the SE program to appropriate organizations, understand the effects of the training, and increase the benefits associated with certification.
