Abstract

Imagine that you are recovering in the weeks following a traumatic injury to your legs. Although you are mobile with the help of a walker or cane, you have an underlying fear of falling that prevents you from living your life to the fullest. You fear taking a walk outside, perhaps even travelling to your own kitchen. You want to get stronger, but you do not have access to a personal trainer. BeneMotus Engineering seeks to address all of these issues with the Semi-Autonomous Wheelchair. By integrating a microcontroller and sensors onto an assistive device, BeneMotus Engineering has developed a product that can provide assurance and security to the walking impaired. The product is capable of following the user while walking, tracking surroundings, and navigating itself towards the user. Because the wheelchair follows the user, they can feel safe knowing that they will always have access to rest when it is necessary, thus encouraging more thorough rehabilitation exercise.
