Abstract

This study evaluated the field performance of asphalt pavements with three different slurry seal applications scenarios: (1) without slurry seal application; (2) single slurry seal application; and (3) two sequential slurry seal applications. The study aimed at developing performance models for asphalt pavements for the three cases at various times following construction, and identified the optimum time for both single and two sequential slurry seals application on asphalt pavements within the Washoe County, Nevada region. This was achieved by evaluating the long-term pavement performance data collected using the MicroPAVER system for the last 15 years and the cost-effectiveness of slurry seals applied to new and existing flexible pavements at years 0, 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 after construction. The data generated in this study clearly reveals an optimum time window for slurry seal applications. For the case of single slurry seal application, the optimum time of application depended on the type of the construction activity. For newly constructed pavements, the optimum time to apply single slurry seal was three years after construction when the pavement condition index (PCI) reaches 88. For pavements subjected to overlays, the optimum time was between three and five years after construction which corresponds to a PCI of 86. On the other hand, for the case of two sequential slurry seal applications, the optimum times and highest relative benefit of application for both overlaid and newly constructed pavements was when the first slurry seal was applied at year three after construction followed by a second slurry seal at year seven or nine. Accordingly, it was recommended to apply the first slurry seal when the PCI is 87 followed by a second slurry seal when the PCI for the newly constructed and overlaid pavements reaches a value of 86 and 77,
