Abstract

The cosmetics industry is an exceptionally profitable business, and one in which chemical engineers are frequently employed. Nail care is one sector of the cosmetics industry, and UV-curable gel nail polish is a niche within the nail care industry. Traditional nail polish air-dries over time, while UV-curable gel nail polish dries through a relatively quick polymerization reaction following exposure to UV-light. This process allows for the creation of a strong, smooth, hard film on the nail. For this project, a team of graduating chemical engineers was tasked with creating formulations for three distinct UV-curable nail polishes for a nail polish company based in Las Vegas. The company currently specializes in traditional, specialty glitter and holographic nail polishes, and is looking into the possibility of expanding their business to include production of UV-curable nail polish. The team was able to present initial iterations for these formulations, a process design and description, an economic analysis of the process, a safety-focused HAZOP for the manufacturing process, and research about relevant engineering standards.
