Abstract
This retrospective examination of adolescent participation in structured youth development activities expands upon previous research to understand how involvement and dosage relates to success in college and future aspirations as young adults. Undergraduate students at one large, western university (n = 221) were surveyed regarding their level of involvement and dosage of participation in structured youth development activities between 7th and 12th grades. Pearson correlation tests were run to find positive relationships between involvement (number of structured activities), current college success, aspirations of completing college, and future aspirations. Dosage of participation (average time actively involved) resulted in both positive and curvilinear relationships with college success and aspirations of completing college; and a positive relationship with future aspirations. These findings contribute to the study of the positive youth development by demonstrating how positive youth characteristics transcend into young adulthood.
