Abstract

Description

What is identity and how is it constructed? How and why are Basque transnational identities maintained in populations of their diaspora – now in more than twenty countries? Combining theories from sociology, political science, history, and anthropology, we will investigate the specifics of Basque migrations, cultural representations, diasporic politics, and ethnonationalism. This work analyzes the Basque Autonomous Government's international relations with various Basque communities abroad and compares them with other similar homeland–ethnic diaspora groups' relations. This unique course aims to explore Basque diaspora studies by comparing ethnonationalism, transnationalism, and identity maintenance in numerous host countries that have significant Basque immigrant populations. We will evaluate the historical, political, economic, and psychological dimensions of migration and the creation of ethnic institutions in the host countries. Readers will examine Basque cultural construction and maintenance and the effects of gender, generation, geography, and globalization on Basque communities outside of Euskal Herria.
